A $3
million grant from Danville Regional Foundation will build a
16,000-square-foot community center on South Main Street in Chatham. The
former B&B Motors building will be razed to make room for the new
facility, which will be open to all Pittsylvania County residents.

Center Ground Breaking - June 5, 2007
CHATHAM, Va.
- Ground breaking for the new community center on Main Street was held
at 6:00 pm on Tuesday June 5th. The board of directors of Chatham Cares,
led by Chuck Warnock, made several introductions; leadership of the Boys
and Girls Club of Danville and Chatham (the anchor program for the
community center), the Danville Regional Foundation (from whom Chatham
Cares received the grant), Dewberry & Davis, Inc. (architects for
the facility), Quality Construction (the contractor), and the mayor of
Chatham and several council members were present. [ See

the area Monday night. Hall of Famer Johnny Bench was the guest speaker
at the Boys & Girls Club of Danville's annual Steak & Steak
charity dinner. Considered possibly the greatest catcher of all time,

... The Chatham unit, which began a year
ago, has about 160 members. The club is open Monday through Friday from 2
p.m. to 7 p.m. at Chatham Baptist Church, and usually has 35 to 40 kids a
day. "Our mission is to serve all kids, but especially children from
disadvantaged situations," said Lee. Membership is just $10 a year,
and there are no weekly or monthly fees. Scholarships are available. [ Read

Demolition to Make Way for New Community
Center

Demolition is scheduled to begin soon on the old B&B Motors building on Main Street to make room for a new $3 million community center in Chatham.
The project is being funded by a grant from the Danville Regional Foundation, which was formed last year to manage and distribute $200 million from the sale of Danville Regional Medical Center.
The foundation awarded a $3 million grant in July to Chatham Cares, a charitable organization formed in 2005 that will own and manage the new community center.

Forward to Chatham Community Center

The children's smiles and laughter were ample reward for First Piedmont Corp. and others who sponsored a Christmas party Monday afternoon for the Boys and Girls Club in Chatham.
About 50 kids ranging in age from 5 to 18 enjoyed pizza, soft drinks, cookies, and cake at Chatham Baptist Church, which hosts the youth club.
