A $3 million grant from Danville Regional Foundation will build a 16,000-square-foot community center on South Main Street in Chatham. The former B&B Motors building will be razed to make room for the new facility, which will be open to all Pittsylvania County residents.

Community Center Ground Breaking - June 5, 2007

CHATHAM, Va. - Ground breaking for the new community center on Main Street was held at 6:00 pm on Tuesday June 5th. The board of directors of Chatham Cares, led by Chuck Warnock, made several introductions; leadership of the Boys and Girls Club of Danville and Chatham (the anchor program for the community center), the Danville Regional Foundation (from whom Chatham Cares received the grant), Dewberry & Davis, Inc. (architects for the facility), Quality Construction (the contractor), and the mayor of Chatham and several council members were present. [ See Photos ] [ The Club Page ]

Baseball Legend Johnny Bench Helps Boys & Girls Club

DANVILLE - A true icon of baseball was in the area Monday night. Hall of Famer Johnny Bench was the guest speaker at the Boys & Girls Club of Danville's annual Steak & Steak charity dinner. Considered possibly the greatest catcher of all time, Bench took his seat behind the plate for the Cincinnati Reds in 1967. [ Read More ]

Boys & Girls Club Event to Feature Baseball Hall of Famer Johnny Bench

... The Chatham unit, which began a year ago, has about 160 members. The club is open Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Chatham Baptist Church, and usually has 35 to 40 kids a day. "Our mission is to serve all kids, but especially children from disadvantaged situations," said Lee. Membership is just $10 a year, and there are no weekly or monthly fees. Demolition to Make Way for New Community Center

Demolition is scheduled to begin soon on the old B&B Motors building on Main Street to make room for a new $3 million community center in Chatham. The project is being funded by a grant from the Danville Regional Foundation, which was formed last year to manage and distribute $200 million from the sale of Danville Regional Medical Center. The foundation awarded a $3 million grant in July to Chatham Cares, a charitable organization formed in 2005 that will own and manage the new community center. [ Read More ]

Boys and Girls Club Looks Forward to Chatham Community Center

The children's smiles and laughter were ample reward for First Piedmont Corp. and others who sponsored a Christmas party Monday afternoon for the Boys and Girls Club in Chatham. About 50 kids ranging in age from 5 to 18 enjoyed pizza, soft drinks, cookies, and cake at Chatham Baptist Church, which hosts the youth club. [ Read More ]
