Partnering for Art's Sake
A Chatham, Va., church uses the arts to befriend its small town.
By Alicia Kazsuk, Writer, Outreach Magazine, Published Nov/Dec 2006, pp.
132-134.
Walk the downtown streets of Chatham, Va., on the last Friday night of the month, and you’ll hear everything from quiet recitations of poetry to a piercing guitar solo—all echoing off the buildings in this town of 1,300 people. On such nights, 60 to 70 mostly non-believing teenagers from three area high schools converge on a storefront at 1800 Main Street for Soundcheck—a free, student-led event for teenage artistic expression, sponsored by a local arts initiative and 120-member Chatham Baptist Church.

"Praise for the
Past, Faith for the Future" is the theme for the sesquicentennial
celebrations at Chatham Baptist Church which are being celebrated the last
Sunday of each month for the first seven months of 2007. One hundred fifty
years of ministry and service to the town and community of Chatham was
celebrated Sunday as members remembered one of their past leaders, Lena T.
Barker. Lena organized and directed the adult fellowship in 1984, at the
encouragement of her pastor, David P. Meriwether. Meriwether was at
Chatham Baptist Church Sunday, but Lena was there in spirit, and
represented by members of her family. [

Small Church, Big Impact
At 150, Chatham Baptist Church is still making a difference in its community
By Jim White, Editor, Religious Herald, Published December 14, 2006
To borrow from Abe Lincoln, “God must have loved small churches because he made so many of them.” One of them is Chatham Baptist Church, set to celebrate its 150th anniversary this summer.

Located in southside Virginia near Danville, it, like so many other towns in that area, has experienced economic hardship and little population growth. When Chuck Warnock accepted their call in June of 2004, they had been without a pastor for three years and the church was discouraged about its future.
